**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, dread, and uncertainty regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always leaned toward being introverted, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Challenge of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the task of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern for you too. On my initial day moving into my residence, I spent several hours cocooned in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. These connections have become my second family here at Imperial.

How did this transformation occur? It commenced with casual conversations and connecting with individuals who were feeling just as uncertain as I was. I discovered that stepping out of my comfort zone early on was vital. If you’re not quite ready or comfortable immediately, it’s perfectly fine—there are ample social events and opportunities to engage with others throughout the year. Most importantly, I realized that authenticity is the best strategy. With a community as varied as Imperial’s, you’re sure to discover people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Transition

Adjusting to the academic expectations of university constituted another significant challenge. The shift from A-levels to university coursework was striking, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when you observe peers seemingly mastering their studies.

What facilitated my progress through this challenge was understanding that we are all in the same situation. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely others are too. The essential lesson I gleaned during my first year is to seek assistance—whether from peers or educators. This may be the most vital understanding I gained: don’t hesitate to ask for support.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are compassionate about the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us and were always ready to address our issues.

Although I only fully leveraged the available pastoral support toward the year’s conclusion, I regret not doing so sooner. Embracing the role of a year well-being representative was one of the significant steps I took at the beginning of the year. This role enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the available help and resources—you can never have an excess of support.

### Insights Gained

Upon reflection, this year has shown me that much of the trepidation I experienced before and during my university start was frequently unneeded. With the vast array of support options from both faculty and fellow students, there’s no necessity to confront challenges solo. I’ve discovered that it’s feasible to strike a balance between the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a voyage of growth, perseverance, and revelation. For anyone on the brink of starting their university journey, remember: take that leap, don’t hesitate to seek help, and always embrace your true self.
