### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Coming from a background of being naturally shy and reserved, taking the plunge was definitely outside of my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on an academic year full of growth, obstacles, and enjoyable experiences, I find myself pondering the lessons I’ve learned and the progress I’ve made.
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating aspects I encountered was forging new friendships. This is a major concern for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days ahead of the semester’s start, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. These relationships have blossomed into my second family, both in my program and throughout the university. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating simple conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.
So, what did I gain from this experience? I realized that taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. Even if you’re not feeling quite prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and events designed to help you connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimating to the demands of the coursework and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term was even more marked. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when you observe others studying and find yourself wondering if you’re adequate.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the awareness that we are all experiencing similar challenges. If you’re confused about a topic, chances are there are fellow students who feel the same. The most effective action you can take is to ask for assistance. I firmly believe this is the most vital lesson to embrace in your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to fellow students or seeking help from faculty, asking for support can be transformative.
#### The Dedicated Staff
On the topic of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is truly exceptional. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely care about students’ success and are sensitive to the struggles we encounter. They maintain open channels of communication throughout the year to tackle any concerns we may have.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the smartest choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My foremost takeaway? Make the most of the support accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!
#### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, it’s clear that the anxiety I felt before and during university was largely misplaced. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. I’ve acquired the ability to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments filled with joy and enjoyment.
University represents a journey of personal development, and while it may appear daunting initially, it also presents a chance to uncover your strengths, cultivate lasting friendships, and create cherished memories.
