**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, immersing myself in this new phase felt overwhelming. Now, after reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I can assert that it’s been life-changing. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this proves to be one of the primary worries upon commencing university, and I was no different. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days before classes began, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can happily affirm that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships of my life. These relationships have become like a second family to me, both within my program and throughout the university.
So, what’s the takeaway? Taking that first step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be a multitude of icebreaker events and chances to meet others. And above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Another significant obstacle was adapting to the academic demands and complexity of university-level coursework. The leap from A-level studies to university was tough, with the transition from the first term to the second feeling even more pronounced. It’s easy to doubt oneself when witnessing others diligently studying and feeling as if you’re lagging behind.
What guided me through this was the awareness that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re grappling with understanding something, chances are there are others in the same situation. The vital point is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the staff within the Materials Science department have been exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing direction.
I didn’t make full use of the pastoral care available until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. One proactive step I took early on was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important lesson here? Make the most of the support available—you can never have an excess of assistance!
### Reflections on Lessons Learned
As I contemplate my first year, I realize that much of the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was unfounded. There’s an abundance of support available, whether from staff or fellow students, to help you tackle any hurdles. This year has taught me that I’m never genuinely alone, and it’s feasible to manage exam and deadline stresses alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Looking forward to the upcoming academic year, I feel increasingly assured and eager for what lies ahead. If you’re a prospective student reading this, understand that while the journey may initially feel overwhelming, it is one that is rich with growth, exploration, and extraordinary opportunities.
