**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I readied myself to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had always been quiet and introverted, venturing into unfamiliar territory felt quite intimidating. Now that I reflect on a year of academic development, challenges, and happiness, I can comprehend how significant this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For many new students, this tends to be a major concern about beginning university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the commencement of term, I remained in my room all day, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. These connections have become like a second family for me, both at the university and within my program. What changed? It all began with casual conversations and bonding with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

The crucial takeaway here is to take that initial leap of faith early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker activities and opportunities for socializing. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover others who share your interests and beliefs.

### Addressing the Academic Challenge

Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level material was yet another challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and moving from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s common to feel swamped or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and worry about lagging behind.

What aided me in overcoming this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. The most vital lesson I learned in my first year is the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from fellow students or teaching personnel, don’t shy away from reaching out.

### The Supportive Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial stands out as exceptional. The instructors and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and empathize with the challenges we face. Throughout the academic year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully avail myself of the pastoral support options until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had accessed these resources sooner. One of the wisest decisions I made was to step into the role of a well-being representative for my year. This position facilitated connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these chances. The support they provide can be life-changing.

### Insights Gained

As I contemplate my first year, I recognize that many of the apprehensions I held prior to starting university were unfounded. With abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and personal growth.

If there is one piece of advice I would impart to incoming students, it is this: embrace the challenges, take bold steps, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. University is a period of transformation, and with the right attitude and support, you’ll emerge stronger in the end.
