**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiousness, apprehension, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was not something I was used to. Now, as I reflect on an academic year marked by development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize just how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered when commencing university was the task of making friends. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had.
The pivotal moment occurred when I prompted myself to engage in casual conversations with others who were in a similar situation. Gradually, these dialogues flourished into significant relationships, and I now feel as though I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial. My most important lesson? Take that early leap of faith. If you’re not ready immediately, fret not—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic demands and the increase in subject complexity was yet another obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the leap from the first semester to the second semester felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your skills when you observe others studying and thriving. However, I learned that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding it hard to grasp something, it’s likely that others are too.
The essential strategy for overcoming this challenge was to learn how to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help is crucial. This straightforward action can have a remarkable impact on your confidence and comprehension.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
One of the most remarkable features of my initial year was the extraordinary support I received from the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about helping students succeed and understand the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained clear communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Accepting the position of a year well-being representative was a risk for me, but it turned out to be one of the best choices I’ve made. It helped me form connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and I highly encourage seizing these opportunities. Remember, there’s no such thing as too much support!
### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has shown me that many of the anxious feelings I experienced—both prior to and during university—were unwarranted. With the abundance of support available from staff and fellow students, I came to realize that I was never truly on my own. I also learned how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
Beginning university can be intimidating, but it also serves as an incredible time for growth and exploration. By taking small leaps of faith, asking for assistance, and remaining true to yourself, you can truly maximize this transformative journey.
