**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxious excitement as I prepared to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being inherently shy and reserved, stepping into this new phase felt quite overwhelming. Now that I reflect back, I recognize a year of profound transformation marked by personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting challenges of commencing university was the thought of forming friendships. If you are an incoming student, this is likely a significant concern for you as well. I vividly recall spending my whole first day in my accommodation, hiding in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I have formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

These bonds weren’t established instantly, but rather began with small interactions—engaging in friendly banter with other newcomers who shared the same uncertainty. Gradually, these relationships evolved into a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. My main takeaway? Make that initial move early, even if it feels a bit uncomfortable. If you don’t feel ready at the outset, that’s perfectly fine—there will be an abundance of icebreaker events and chances to connect with peers. Above all, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic rigors of university was yet another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level material was quite striking, and the change from the first term to the second felt particularly intense. It’s natural to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing others seeming to excel.

What proved beneficial for me was reminding myself that we are all navigating the same journey. If there was something I didn’t grasp, it was likely that many were encountering similar struggles. The essential lesson? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether through peers or teaching staff, reaching out for support is vital. Learning to ask for help early on can significantly enhance your first-year experience.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
A standout feature of my experience has been the remarkable support provided by the Materials Science faculty. They are genuinely committed to student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained transparent communication with us, addressing our concerns and offering valuable guidance.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, I now wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of my best choices was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, getting to know the faculty is one of the most beneficial actions you can take. My suggestion? Take advantage of the support available—it is designed to help you thrive.

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I realize that many of the worries I held—both prior to and during the year—were unfounded. Thanks to the abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I discovered that I was never truly alone. I also learned how to strike a balance between the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of fun.

This year has been a period of growth, and I take pride in the progress I’ve made. To anyone on the brink of starting their university journey: embrace the obstacles, seek assistance when required, and remember to savor the experience.
