**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been quiet and introverted, jumping straight into this new stage of life felt overwhelming. Now, as I look back on the past academic year, I recognize a journey characterized by personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forging friendships. If you’re a potential student perusing this, it’s likely one of your concerns as well. On my first day in student housing, just a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others.
Fast forward to the present day, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have become like a second family to me, both within my program and across the university. What was my key to success? Taking that initial step of faith and engaging in small talks with others who were just as new and apprehensive as myself.
Here’s what I discovered: it’s beneficial to move out of your comfort zone early. If you’re not fully prepared, don’t be concerned—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when you observe others appearing to excel.
What supported me during those moments of uncertainty was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you find something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial point is to reach out for assistance—be it from your classmates or the instructional staff. This is perhaps the most important lesson I acquired in my first year: don’t hesitate to seek assistance.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They earnestly wish for students to thrive and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our anxieties and offering advice.
Though I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, I wish I had made use of it sooner. Taking on the role of a yearly well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to foster relationships with faculty members, which became immensely beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the staff is among the best actions you can take for yourself at university. My recommendation? Utilize all the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even during it—was often unwarranted. There’s an abundance of support accessible, both from faculty and fellow students, to aid you in overcoming any hurdles. I’ve come to understand that I’m never isolated and that it’s possible to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of fun and relaxation.
As I gear up to enter my second year, I feel a deep sense of appreciation for the experiences and growth I’ve encountered thus far. For those about to embark on their university journey, realize that the challenges you encounter will contribute to shaping you, and the support surrounding you will make all the difference.
