**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself grappling with anxiety, apprehension, and a sense of unpredictability regarding the path I was about to take. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always maintained a shy demeanor, immersing myself in such a novel and demanding atmosphere felt daunting. Reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of joyful experiences. So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Trepidation of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating trials I encountered was the quest to forge friendships. This concern is a prevalent one for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my first day at the student housing, merely days prior to the term commencing, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively claim that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships of my life. These connections have evolved into my second family, both in my program and throughout the university. It all began with casual conversations and bonding with others who were equally anxious as I was.
What did I discover? Taking that first courageous step at the beginning of the year is priceless. If you’re feeling unprepared or anxious, don’t fret—there are myriad icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, I realized the importance of just being myself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Another major challenge I faced was adapting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university life was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competence when surrounded by other accomplished students.
What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If something wasn’t clear to me, likely others were grappling with it too. The essential lesson? Never hesitate to seek assistance. Whether reaching out to classmates or faculty, seeking help is one of the vital skills to nurture in your first year.
### Support from Faculty
On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained an open line of communication, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. Early on, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for the year, allowing me to forge connections with staff. This turned out to be immensely beneficial. Whether through official roles or informal exchanges, familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors is one of the best steps you can take for your own benefit. My suggestion? Utilize the support frameworks available; you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt before and during my time at university was often unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, those feelings of uncertainty can be addressed and conquered.
Most importantly, I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone. University has equipped me with the ability to manage the stress of examinations and deadlines while also enjoying moments of fun and leisure. It has been a transformative year, and I am eager to see what lies ahead.
