**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and shy, plunging into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich in growth, challenges, and an abundance of joy, I can genuinely recognize the depth of my learning and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your primary concerns. On my first day in student accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.
These connections didn’t emerge instantly, but were cultivated through small gestures—like engaging in light conversation with others who were just as inexperienced and apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these interactions blossomed into what feels like a second family.
So, what have I taken away from this? Taking that first bold step is essential. If you’re not quite ready to jump in immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be many social events and opportunities to connect with others. Most importantly, be authentic. Within the diverse community at Imperial, you’re likely to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Adapting to Academic Rigors
Another notable challenge was acclimating to the heightened workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more formidable. It can be easy to feel inundated or second-guess your capabilities when you observe others studying or grasping concepts more swiftly.
What assisted me in navigating this was understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to comprehend, it’s likely that others are as well. The secret lies in asking for assistance—whether from your peers or teaching staff. Learning to seek help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
In terms of support, the staff within the Materials department have been exceptional. They are genuinely invested in student success and are considerate of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of my best choices was to take on the role of a year well-being representative. This position helped me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal exchanges, developing relationships with faculty is one of the best actions you can take for yourself.
My biggest lesson? Make the most of the resources and support at your disposal. There’s no such thing as excessive assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from staff and peers, I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone. More significantly, I’ve learned how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and fulfillment.
This initial year has been a transformative journey, and I’m eager to discover what lies ahead as I proceed in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
