**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of embarking on my first-year journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been quite shy and introverted, diving headfirst into this new environment was well outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize it as one rich with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyable moments. But what insights have I gained from this experience, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous newcomers, this is one of the primary concerns when entering university. On my first day in student housing, just a few days ahead of the term’s official start, I spent the entire day secluding myself in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.
These connections feel like an additional family, all initiated through simple, casual dialogues with individuals who were equally anxious as I was. What have I taken away from this experience? Making that initial bold move at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Above all, just be yourself. With a diverse cohort of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re certain to find those who align with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the jump from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being in such a demanding academic atmosphere can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in managing this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar difficulties. If something isn’t clear, the likelihood is that others are grappling with the same issue. The pivotal point is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Cultivating the ability to ask for support is perhaps the most critical skill to master in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the subject of support, I cannot stress enough how incredible the staff in the Materials department are. They sincerely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and responded to our issues.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here is to leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt before and during my university journey was frequently unwarranted. There are countless resources and support systems available, from staff to peers, to help navigate challenges. This year has taught me that I am never genuinely alone, and it’s entirely feasible to enjoy myself amid the pressures of exams and timelines.
As I look toward the future, I feel increasingly confident and eager about what’s next. If you’re a prospective student reading this, realize that while the path may initially seem overwhelming, it is also a remarkable opportunity for growth, connection, and exploration.
