**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been modest and introverted, stepping into the unknown was quite daunting. Now, as I review the past academic year, I see a time of significant personal development, trials, and memorable experiences. So, what have I learned this year, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of making friends. Starting university can feel overwhelming, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern of yours as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days before the term started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to go out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some incredible friendships—connections that feel like a second family.

What changed? It began with simple conversations and recognizing that everyone else shared my feelings. I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not prepared or at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I learned that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic requirements of university was another major hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second felt particularly challenging. It’s easy to lose confidence when you observe others engaged in their studies and worry that you’re lagging behind. But here’s the reality: everyone is facing similar obstacles.

If something doesn’t make sense to you, it’s likely that others are struggling with it as well. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. This may be the most crucial insight I gained in my first year: don’t hesitate to seek help.

### The Importance of Supportive Staff

Speaking of assistance, the Materials Science faculty at Imperial are remarkable. They wholeheartedly wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.

While I didn’t utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Initially, I made the bold decision to become a year well-being representative, which helped me forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous paths to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My greatest takeaway? Leverage the support systems provided to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Conclusions Drawn

Looking back on this year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced before and during my university transition was often unwarranted. With the ample support from faculty and fellow students, those fears can be eased. I’ve recognized that I am never alone in facing obstacles, and I’ve learned to balance the stress of assessments and deadlines with delightful and joyful moments.

This year has been a transformative adventure, and I’m eager to see what the future has in store as I proceed with my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
