**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, jumping into the unknown felt incredibly intimidating. Reflecting on an academic year rich with personal growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I now fully appreciate the extent of my learning and progress.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may feel similarly. On my first day in student housing, just days before the term initiated, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I have formed some of the best friendships in my life.

At Imperial, I discovered a second family—individuals who share my passions, uplift me, and enhance my enjoyment of life here. All it took was some light conversation with others who were equally new and apprehensive. My main takeaway? Make that effort early on. Even if you don’t feel prepared, numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet others will arise. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you will undoubtedly find individuals who connect with you.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic demands and challenges proved to be another significant obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was pronounced, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s all too easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others seemingly flourishing.

What aided me was the realization that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping material, chances are your peers are as well. The essential action is to seek help—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to ask for support may be the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Support Circles

On the subject of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it resulted in one of my best decisions. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which became incredibly valuable. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual exchanges, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can significantly impact your experience. My recommendation? Make the most of all the support that’s offered—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

This year has revealed to me that the anxiety I experienced before starting university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. With the abundance of support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I learned to balance examination stress and deadlines with moments of laughter and enjoyment, and I have developed in ways I never anticipated.

Reflecting back, I am thankful for the challenges and opportunities that have defined my first year. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university adventure, remember that feeling nervous is completely normal. Embrace the journey, seek assistance when necessary, and most importantly, savor every moment.
