**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about what was coming. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Reflecting back now, I recognize an academic year filled with development, difficulties, and memorable moments. But what insights have I gained, and how do I feel today?

### Conquering the Fear of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the idea of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On the day I moved into my dorm, just days before classes commenced, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like family.

How did this transformation occur? It began with small actions, like engaging in casual conversations with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was. I discovered that taking a bold step at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared right away, that’s okay—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, I found that authenticity is the best strategy. With such a wide range of people in the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who connect with you.

### Addressing Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the workload and the intricacies of the curriculum was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped and question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others studying diligently and appearing to thrive.

What guided me during these challenging times was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you find yourself having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others do as well. The crucial factor is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or the teaching staff. This is perhaps the most important lesson I acquired during my first year: don’t be reluctant to ask for help.

### Encouraging Staff and Support Services

On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely wish for students to excel and show understanding towards the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us and responded to our queries. Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral care system until the latter part of the year, I wish I had accessed it earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by volunteering as a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to establish relationships with staff members, which proved to be tremendously beneficial. There are various avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can significantly impact your university journey. My main takeaway from this is to leverage the support structures available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Key Takeaways

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. There are abundant resources and support networks designed to aid students in navigating their challenges. This year has shown me that I’m never truly alone and that balancing the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment is achievable.

As I look ahead, I’m thankful for the personal development, friendships, and insights I’ve acquired during this transformative year. If you’re about to begin your own university adventure, remember to take those leaps of faith, embrace the support available to you, and above all, remain true to yourself.
