**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into the unfamiliar seemed daunting. Reflecting now, I recognize a year marked not just by obstacles, but also by personal development, self-exploration, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights has this year provided, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was establishing friendships. For many incoming students, this stands as a predominant fear, and I was certainly no exception. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days prior to the commencement of term, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and greet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively proclaim that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships I have ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my course and university-wide. It all initiated with small actions—sparking casual discussions with those who were in similar situations.
What did I gain from this? I discovered that taking a courageous step at the year’s beginning is essential. Even if you don’t feel adequately prepared or at ease, there will be various social events and chances to engage with others. Above all, I realized that being authentic is the most effective way to discover your community. With such a varied demographic at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Transition
Another notable challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being in a rigorous academic setting can occasionally erode your confidence, particularly when observing peers who appear to have everything under control.
What aided me in navigating this was the awakening that everyone is enduring similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a topic, it’s likely others are too. The vital approach is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This is undoubtedly the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is phenomenal. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. They resonate with us and sustain open lines of communication throughout the year to address any issues.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the support services available until the latter part of the year, I wish I had started earlier. Early on, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are various avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt before entering university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive range of support options proffered by both staff and fellow students, those apprehensions became manageable.
This year has enlightened me that I’m never genuinely alone, even during times of uncertainty or pressure. It has taught me how to strike a balance between diligence and enjoyment, even amidst examinations and deadlines. Most importantly, it’s been a year of advancement, both academically and personally.
As I progress, I’m eager to see what subsequent chapters of university life will unveil. To anyone about to embark on a similar path: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and remember to relish the journey.
