**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into the depths of university life felt daunting. Now, as I look back on an academic year filled with progress, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve learned and how far I’ve traveled.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Starting university can feel intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had. The friends I’ve made here have become like a second family to me, and all it took was breaking out of my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversation with others who were in the same situation as I was.

What did I learn? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is truly worthwhile. If you don’t feel ready or are uncomfortable at first, don’t fret! There are plenty of icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals at university, you’re likely to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the more complex nature of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was distinct, and the transition from the first term to the second felt particularly steep. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or doubt your skills, especially when observing others studying and feeling as though you’re lagging behind.

What aided me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you find something confusing, it’s likely that others are grappling with it too. The critical thing is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Mastering the art of asking for help could very well be the most vital skill you cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Support

On the subject of help, I can’t emphasize enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They truly want students to thrive and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and providing support.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had sought it earlier. Accepting the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took early on, and it turned out to be an enriching experience. It helped me develop connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My advice? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Key Insights

Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the abundance of support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I learned to juggle the stress from exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and enjoyment.

If you’re about to start your own university adventure, know that feeling nervous is completely normal. But also understand that you’ll evolve, adapt, and carve out your niche. Take those bold steps, seek assistance, and most importantly, savor the experience!
