**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year marked by growth, obstacles, and a whole lot of enjoyment, I recognize the transformative nature of the experience. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current standing?

### Confronting Friendship Fears

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. The onset of university can be intimidating, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day settling into student housing, I spent the whole time tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a surrogate family—companions who share my journey and support me through the ups and downs of university life. It all commenced with casual conversations and connecting with those who were experiencing the same feelings as me. My most significant lesson? Make the effort to connect early. If you’re not feeling quite ready or confident in the beginning, don’t stress—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, just be your authentic self. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with you.

### Navigating Academic Adjustments

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university coursework was apparent, and the shift from the first term to the next felt particularly tough. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and worrying if you’re lagging behind.

What benefitted me the most was coming to terms with the fact that everyone is in a similar situation. If there’s something you don’t grasp, others likely feel the same. The secret is reaching out for assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching faculty. Learning to seek help early is one of the most crucial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### Aiding from the Staff

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely desire for students to succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we face. They maintain transparent communication with us throughout the academic year and are always willing to assist.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care offered until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. One of the proactive steps I took at the year’s outset was becoming a well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with staff members, proving to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the available support systems—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during the academic year—was frequently unwarranted. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment, and I’ve undergone immense personal growth.

To anyone getting ready to commence university: embrace the trials, take those leaps of faith, and remember that help is always at hand.
