Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite an experience. The city loomed large, buzzing, and energetic, leaving me uncertain about where to start with only a suitcase and Google Maps as my guide. If this is your upcoming reality, there’s no need for concern. Here’s some guidance to help you transition into London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to embrace your new life in the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks ahead of schedule or right before classes commence, here’s the wisdom I wish I had been given when I landed.
First things first: secure your accommodation
Avoid costly hotel expenses by arranging your housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime options get snapped up quickly. Ideally, find a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize long journeys for early classes.
Essential logistics: taking care of the must-haves
Once you arrive in London, promptly tackle these crucial tasks:
- Money transfers – As an international student, look for a trustworthy and economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Obtain one right away for data and directions in your new environment.
- Bank account – Some banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Set up an account for daily transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for gaining entry to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.
Your first week at Imperial is crucial
Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the time when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and immerse yourself in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and made some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. The tone for your university adventure is set in this first week.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Don’t make my mistake—get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper Tube and bus travel.
Nonetheless, walking remains the best way to experience the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you’ll uncover through exploration.
Discover your comforting spots
London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the start. Having a go-to place is beneficial – mine is the park close to my home, where I go daily to unwind. Another comforting location for me is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I catch movies weekly to relax.
Identify your own comforting spots, like a cafe, bookstore, or riverbank bench, where you can chill and recharge. It’s more valuable than you might realize.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with key areas around your campus and residence. Identify your nearby supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Visit iconic landmarks and spend your weekends getting to know your new city. Explore free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a bit lost!
Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life
- Bring a reusable bag – stores often charge for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t cut it in windy conditions.
- Embrace unusual events – they lead to the best stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s normal to feel that way at first.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London story one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
