Arriving in London for the very first time felt intense. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself uncertain about where to begin. If you’re on the verge of this experience, there’s no need to stress. Here’s my guidance for acclimating to London before your journey at Imperial, allowing you to truly savor your new urban life.
Whether you come weeks in advance or right before classes start, here is the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First and foremost: secure your living arrangements
Book your accommodation early to avoid hefty hotel charges. I was lucky, but not everyone shares this fortune, as prime choices vanish swiftly. Target a location close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy trips for morning lectures.
Administrative tasks: arranging vital necessities
Once you’ve landed in London, tackle these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, explore an efficient, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you steer clear of unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is crucial for navigating unfamiliar territory. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan right away.
- Establishing a bank account – some banks require a UK residence, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Open an account for daily spending and part-time job deposits.
- Obtain your student ID card – this is vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.
Your inaugural week at Imperial holds significant weight
Your initial week at Imperial is paramount. It’s when you’ll meet roommates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, encourage yourself to get involved. I did, and I made lasting friendships during campus excursions and society showcases. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube or bus systems and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but also quite chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city’s hidden treasures.
Discover your cozy spaces
London can be emotionally taxing. Having a familiar spot is beneficial – mine is a local park where I frequently go to unwind. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another place where I relax weekly while watching a movie. Identify your own comforting locations, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench.
And remember to venture out!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll often visit around campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots. Tour iconic landmarks, check out free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most memorable experiences will arise from getting a little lost!
Last pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Get a reusable bag – stores often impose charges for single-use ones.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against wind-driven rain.
- Participate in unusual events – they create great narratives.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the beginning.
