If you are about to embark on this experience, have no fear. Here’s how to adapt to your new life in London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.
Whether you come weeks in advance or right before the semester, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given.
Locate Accommodation
Prevent pricey hotel bills by securing a place to stay promptly. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The finest options disappear swiftly, so seek out something close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to lessen commute times.
Essential Life Admin
Take care of these necessities shortly after you arrive in London:
- Money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps such as Wise or Revolut for economical transactions.
- UK SIM card – obtain one quickly to avoid being without data.
- Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer fast and student-friendly services.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing the campus, borrowing from the library, and claiming student discounts.
Initial Week at Imperial
Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, encourage yourself to get involved. I forged strong friendships during unexpected tours and society booths.
Getting Around London: Travel Wisely
In my first week, I trekked nine kilometers through London. Avoid this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is still excellent for uncovering hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London might feel daunting. Pinpoint a comforting place, like a park or café, to unwind and recharge. My havens are a nearby park and the O2 for films.

Get acquainted with nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Tour iconic landmarks, free museums, and embark on unplanned strolls. Some of your fondest memories will stem from wandering off the beaten path.
