Stepping foot in London for the first time was an awe-inspiring experience. The city felt enormous, noisy, and incredibly fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was at a loss for where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimatize to London prior to beginning your studies at Imperial, so you can fully embrace your new life in the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just moments before the term begins, here’s what I wish I had known upon my initial arrival.
First things first: secure accommodation
Steer clear of costly hotel reservations by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The most favorable options vanish swiftly! Strive for a location close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes for morning lectures can be challenging.
Organize essentials: managing your life admin
Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is essential for navigating a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan right away.
- Bank account – while some banks may require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer swift and student-friendly options. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time work payments.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.
The inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal
Your first week at Imperial is essential for shaping your student journey. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that spark your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I did and forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society stalls. Your first week will set the trajectory for your university experience.
Exploring London: travel wisely
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an adventure but quite chaotic. Don’t follow my example. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.
Nonetheless, walking is a fantastic way to soak in the city and its culture. London boasts many hidden treasures that you’ll uncover while wandering.
Establish your comfort zones
London can be emotionally taxing, especially at first. Having a comforting space is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. My second favorite spot is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I catch movies weekly to relax.
Discover your own special spaces, whether they be a café, bookstore, or bench by the river. These locations can aid you in finding peace and rejuvenation more than you might imagine.
And remember to venture out!
Familiarize yourself with frequently visited areas around campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and go-to dining or coffee spots.
Explore notable landmarks. Spend your weekends discovering your new city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a scenic view, and meander without a specific itinerary. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit off course!
Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can’t hold up against the wind.
- Attend unique events – they create fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel a bit adrift – it’s a common feeling initially.
