Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt enormous, noisy, and incredibly fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I sensed a bit of confusion. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s how to get your life settled in London before your journey at Imperial begins, ensuring you make the most of the city.
Whether you land weeks in advance or just in time for the semester, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me.
First things first: secure your accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your housing early. I was fortunate, but that’s not the case for everyone. The most desirable options fly off the market quickly! Try to find a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line – getting to early lectures can be challenging if you’re more than an hour away.
Life admin: tackling the essential tasks
Once you land in London, tackle these essentials promptly:
- Money transfer – as an international student, identify a trustworthy method to move money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation in a new environment.
- Bank account – some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish one for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it without delay.
Your initial week at Imperial is critical
Your first week at Imperial holds great significance. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re feeling timid, challenge yourself to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society fairs. This week establishes the groundwork for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
<pDuring my initial week, I struggled to navigate the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer hike across London. It was disorganized yet unforgettable – don’t replicate my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains the finest way to absorb the city and its culture. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures by meandering about.
Identify your comforting spaces
London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the onset. Locate a comforting venue – mine is a park close to my residence. I frequent it daily for some downtime. Another favorite is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly. Discover your own retreats, whether it be a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.
And remember to venture out!
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and beloved dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a double-decker bus for the scenic views, and roam without a specific plan. Some of your fondest memories will come from getting a bit lost!
Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life
- Pick up a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t suffice in windy conditions.
- Accept invitations to unique events – they can lead to fantastic stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – that’s a common feeling at first.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
