Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city felt immense, noisy, and bustling. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I sensed disorientation. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need for concern. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to beginning at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban lifestyle.

No matter if you show up weeks in advance or just ahead of the semester, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me.

Secure Your Accommodation

Arrange your living situation early to prevent high hotel costs. I was lucky, but not everyone will be. Opt for a location close to your campus or along a dependable Tube route to minimize lengthy travels.

Essential Life Admin

As soon as you arrive, take care of the following essentials:

  • Money Transfers – Utilize applications like Wise or Revolut for cost-effective international transfers.
  • UK SIM Card – Obtain one right away for data access and navigation.
  • Bank Account – Digital banking options such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly.
  • Student ID Card – Vital for gaining campus access, library services, and discounts.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is essential for meeting your flatmates, classmates, and forging friendships. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you feel introverted, challenge yourself to join in.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

Avoid walking everywhere as I did. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Strolling is excellent for uncovering hidden treasures, however.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be quite intense. Locate a comforting spot, such as a park or café, where you can unwind. Such locations assist you in resetting and finding tranquility in the city.

Discover!

Get acquainted with nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Explore landmarks, museums, and savor the city. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from your explorations.

Final Recommendations

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid extra charges.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas won’t suffice.
  • Join unusual events for memorable stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal.

You don’t have to have everything planned out from the start. If you’re reading this, you’re already making progress. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure.
