**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and doubt about the future. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who has always been introverted and quiet, immersing myself in this new environment was well outside my comfort zone. Reflecting now, I can see that this academic year was rich with growth, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained from this journey, and where am I today?
### Surmounting the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A major obstacle I encountered at the onset of university was establishing friendships. For numerous incoming students, this can be one of the most daunting elements of beginning university life. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days before the semester started, I spent the whole time tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself to anyone.
Now, looking back, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships in my life. The individuals I’ve met—both within my program and throughout the university—have become a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
So, what have I learned? I’ve realized that taking risks at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not quite ready or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle with others. Most critically, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Confronting Academic Obstacles
Another substantial challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was apparent, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your skills when observing others study and wondering if you’re managing to keep up.
What supported me during these challenging times was the understanding that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re grappling with comprehending a concept, chances are others are too. The most vital lesson I gleaned in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Be it from classmates or faculty, reaching out for guidance can significantly impact your experience.
### Assistance from Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing all concerns we raised.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made at the beginning of the year, and it ultimately proved to be a wise choice. It provided me with the chance to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which has been invaluable. There are multiple avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the support on offer—you can never receive too much help!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has shown me that the unease I experienced before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. There exists a vast array of support, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you navigate any obstacles. I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance my enjoyment of life with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
Looking back, I take pride in my progress. My first year at Imperial has been a journey of personal development, filled with significant lessons and lasting memories. To anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and remember that support is always nearby.
