Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and buzzing with life. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your journey begins at Imperial, so you can fully embrace your new city adventure.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term’s start, here’s the insight I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First and foremost: secure your accommodation
To avoid pricey hotel stays, make accommodation arrangements well ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the best spots fill up fast. Aim for a location close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to spare yourself from lengthy commutes to morning classes.
Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials
Upon reaching London, tackle these necessities immediately:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one right away to ensure you have data for directions in an unfamiliar area.
- Bank account – while some banks require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday spending and part-time job income.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, the library, and obtaining student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.
The initial week at Imperial is crucial
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for shaping your student experience. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and sign up for activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I formed close friendships during campus tours and society activities. Your inaugural week establishes the groundwork for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my initial week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains the finest way to absorb the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.
Identify your comfort zones
London can initially feel emotionally overwhelming. Having a personal refuge is beneficial – my go-to is the park near my residence. I stop by daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, only ten minutes away, where I catch movies every week.
Seek out your own comfort areas, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spots allow you to relax and rejuvenate.
And remember to discover!
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.
Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus for the views. Stroll without an itinerary; some of your finest memories will emerge from a little bit of wandering!
Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life
- Acquire a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas fall short against rain driven by the wind.
- Accept invitations to unique events – they lead to fantastic stories.
- Do not worry if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences that at first.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
