Upon my initial arrival in London, the city appeared vast, noisy, fast-moving, and somewhat daunting. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here are my suggestions to help you acclimate to London before embarking on your journey at Imperial, allowing you to enjoy your new surroundings.

Whether you’re arriving a few weeks in advance or right before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I’d received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Prevent high hotel costs by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top options disappear rapidly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Administrative essentials: managing the must-dos

Once you’re in London, focus on these tasks:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – make sure you have data for navigation, particularly in an unfamiliar area. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan promptly.
  • Setting up a bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.
  • Student ID card – critical for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial is crucial

Your first week at Imperial holds significant importance for your student experience. It’s when you will encounter flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies and involve yourself in what sparks your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I did and made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – don’t replicate my mistake. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel around London economically.

Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.

Discover your comfort zones

London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at the start. Having a reassuring spot helps – mine is the park near my residence. I visit daily to rejuvenate and reflect. My second haven is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I catch movies weekly to relax.

Identify your own comforting places, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge. It’s more beneficial than you might realize.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with your frequently visited areas around campus and home. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee spots.

Visit iconic landmarks, discover free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your best memories will stem from getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before you dive into Imperial student life

  • Obtain a reusable bag – shops often impose charges for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fall short in windy conditions.
  • Embrace unconventional events – they create the best narratives.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – many do initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I commenced at Imperial – so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and initiate your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
