Coming to London for the first time was an astonishing experience. The city felt enormous, noisy, and rapid. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you adjust to life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor the experience of being a newcomer in this vibrant city.

Whether you arrive early or just before the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I had known upon my initial arrival.

Find accommodation

To dodge pricey hotel rates, book your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime spots fill up quickly. Strive to find a place close to your campus or a convenient Tube line to prevent lengthy travels to early classes.

Essential administrative tasks

When you arrive in London, quickly address these essential matters:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut offer advantageous exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one right away to avoid being without data in a new place.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for day-to-day transactions and payments from any part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as you can.

The significance of your first week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time when you will meet roommates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you are a bit reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Smart travel in London

At first, I didn’t grasp the Tube or bus systems and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but rather chaotic. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares. Walking is still an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be a lot to handle, so find a spot that offers you comfort. For me, it’s the park near my home and the local O2 for films. Discover your own places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.

Discover the city

Acquaint yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Explore famous landmarks, free museums, and enjoy what the city has to offer. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from a little bit of getting lost.

Final suggestions for commencing at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas can be ineffective in the wind.
  • Participate in unusual events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a normal feeling initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
