Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself about to go through this, there’s no need to panic. Here’s a guide on how to adjust to life in London prior to commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city.

Whether you arrive ahead of time or just moments before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given.

First things first: secure a place to live

Prevent costly hotel bills by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that isn’t the case for everyone. The top choices disappear quickly. Aim for a location close to campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize commuting time.

Life admin: managing the necessary essentials

When you arrive in London, make sure to handle these essentials:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, seek a trustworthy method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one right away to ensure you have data for navigation.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. You’ll need an account for transactions and part-time employment.
  • Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it promptly.

The initial week at Imperial is crucial

Your first week at Imperial is significant. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, peers, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, try to engage. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society functions. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was a memorable experience but quite hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your comfort zones

London can be quite intense. Identify a comforting place, such as a park, café, or bookstore, for unwinding and resetting. My go-to spots are a local park and the O2 for films. These venues provide solace in the expansive city.

And be sure to explore!

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Find supermarkets, drugstores, parks, and your favorite dining establishments. Check out notable landmarks, museums, and ride a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering without a specific plan.

Last pieces of advice before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are often ineffective in windy conditions.
  • Participate in unique events – they can lead to fantastic stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
