Stepping into London for the first time was an intense experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and incredibly dynamic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar scenario, relax. Here’s my guidance to help you adapt to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor your new city adventure.

Whether you arrive weeks ahead or right before classes start, this is the guidance I wish was available to me upon arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same fortune. The prime selections disappear quickly. Search for a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Key Life Administrative Tasks

As soon as you land in London, tackle these essential tasks:

  • Money Transfers – As an overseas student, seek a trustworthy, affordable method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better conversion rates.
  • UK SIM Card – Acquire one promptly to guarantee you have data for navigation in a new city.
  • Bank Account – Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and income from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID Card – This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and discounts available to students. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The Significance of the First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is essential. It’s the moment you’ll connect with flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and organizations. Even if you feel reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I formed lasting friendships during spontaneous campus explorations and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Navigate Efficiently in London

At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was memorable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. Walking remains an excellent way to explore and stumble upon hidden treasures in the city.

Discover Your Favorite Spots

London can be emotionally intense. Having a comforting place aids in coping. For me, it’s the park by my home and the O2, where I relax weekly. Find your own locations, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and unwind.

Wander Around the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll visit most frequently near campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred spots for food or coffee. Explore notable landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy the scenery from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will come from a bit of wandering!

Final Suggestions Before Starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are ineffective against the wind.
  • Participate in unusual events for memorable stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal initially.

There’s no need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London story one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
