If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to genuinely relish your stay in the city.
Whether you’re arriving several weeks early or just right before term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had been given upon my arrival.
First things first: secure accommodation
Book your housing early to bypass costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the finest options disappear quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, since long commutes can be tough with early morning lectures.
Life administration: organizing key necessities
There are several essentials you should tackle as soon as you land in London:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Apps like Wise or Revolut can prevent unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – possessing data is vital for navigating a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan without delay.
- Establishing a bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and any part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this is vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain your ID card as soon as you can.
The initial week at Imperial is vital
Your first week at Imperial is essential for shaping your student experience. It’s the moment to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, engaging in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, aim to get involved. I did, and it led me to some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society events. Your initial week establishes the tone for your university experience.
Navigating London: travel smartly
<pDuring my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for cheaper travel.
Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort spots
London can initially be emotionally taxing. Having a comforting place is beneficial – for me, it’s the park near my residence, where I go every day to unwind. My second comfort location is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy weekly movie outings.
Discover your own retreats, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spots offer a chance to relax and recharge.

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll often visit around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues.
Explore renowned landmarks, check out free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and stroll without a specific plan. Some of your finest memories will stem from wandering a bit off the beaten path!
