Stepping foot in London for the very first time was an astonishing experience. The city felt immense, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was overwhelmed. If you’re about to undertake a similar adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to ease your transition into your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to make the most of the city.

Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or right before the semester starts, here’s the advice I wish had been given to me when I got here.

First priority: find housing

Prevent the expensive burden of hotels by securing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime choices get snapped up quickly. Strive to find a spot near your campus or at least along a reliable Tube line, since lengthy commutes can be challenging for early classes.

Essential life set-up tasks

Once you arrive in London, focus on these tasks:

  • Financial management – as an international student, seek out a dependable, cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can help steer clear of unfavorable exchange rates.
  • Getting a UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating in a new environment. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan promptly after your arrival.
  • Opening a bank account – some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly options. Set up an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time earnings.
  • Retrieving your student ID card – this is crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.

Significance of the inaugural week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and participate in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you tend to be reserved, make an effort to join in. I did, and it led to forming some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your initial week shapes the foundation of your university experience.

Smart commuting in London

In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, causing me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Avoid my blunder by securing a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Find your comforting places

Initially, London can feel quite emotionally intense. Discovering a comforting space is beneficial – for me, it’s the park near my residence, where I unwind daily. The O2, just a short 10-minute trip away, is another preferred location for catching a film.

Identify your own cozy spaces, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These havens offer much-needed peace.

Discover and savor!

Get familiar with the commonly visited spots around your campus and home. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee places.

Visit iconic sites, explore complimentary museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your best memories will emerge from spontaneous explorations.

Final pieces of advice before immersing yourself in Imperial life

  • Carry a reusable shopping bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas can be ineffective against strong gusts.
  • Be open to unique events – they often cultivate great stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel a bit lost at first – it’s a common sentiment.

There’s no requirement to have all the answers from the get-go. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
