Landing in London for the very first time was quite the experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re approaching this moment, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimatizing to your new life in London prior to beginning at Imperial, ensuring you relish the city.

Whether you show up weeks in advance or right before term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I would have received upon my arrival.

First thing’s first: secure your accommodation

Arrange your lodging ahead of time to steer clear of costly hotel accommodations. I was lucky, but not all are, as the best places get snatched up quickly. Seek a residence close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes to early classes.

Administrative necessities: organizing essential tasks

There are a few things to sort out shortly after reaching London:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method to receive funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly for data and navigation in a new city.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and well-suited for students. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time earnings.
  • Student ID card – vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

Your inaugural week at Imperial is critical

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s the time you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and sign up for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel reserved, make an effort to join in. I did and formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week will set the pace for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers throughout London. It was a memorable but hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for less expensive travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent method to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your comfort zones

London can initially feel emotionally taxing. Having a safe haven is beneficial – mine is a local park. I frequent it daily to unwind. Another location I cherish is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I catch movies every week.

Identify your own refuge, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to help you relax and recharge.

Don’t forget to venture out!

Familiarize yourself with your campus and surrounding areas. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, check out free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus, and meander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a little lost!

Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

  • Grab a reusable bag – shops typically charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against the wind.
  • Embrace spontaneous events – they often lead to memorable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you’re feeling disoriented – it’s a common experience at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re perusing this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco outing at a time.
