Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself uncertain about how to proceed. If you’re about to undergo this experience, there’s no need for concern. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London prior to your start at Imperial, allowing you to genuinely enjoy the city.
Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just in time for the semester, here’s the counsel I wished I had been given upon my arrival.
First things first: secure your accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotel rates by arranging your living situation early. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the top choices get taken quickly. Try to find a place close to your university or a dependable Tube line – lengthy commutes are not ideal for early morning sessions.
Life logistics: getting the essentials sorted
Once you’re in London, tackle these crucial tasks without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you dodge unfavorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating in a new environment. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
- Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, yet digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time earnings.
- Student ID card – this enables access to university facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The first week at Imperial is essential
Your initial week at Imperial is significant. It’s when you will connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take advantage of Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that catch your interest.
Even if you’re hesitant, challenge yourself to engage. I did and forged friendships during campus tours and society showcases. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my first week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – don’t emulate my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel via Tube and buses affordably.
Walking remains a fantastic way to soak in the city and its culture. London has hidden treasures waiting to be discovered through exploration.
Identify your cozy spots
London can be emotionally intense, especially initially. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go daily to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie each week.
Discover your own comforting places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These areas provide essential relaxation and time to recharge.
And be sure to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent near campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Visit famous landmarks and dedicate weekends to uncovering your new city. Enjoy free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will come from moments of getting a bit lost!
Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life
- Utilize a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective in windy conditions.
- Participate in unique events – they create wonderful stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone feels that way at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure, one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
