Stepping into London for the first time was an astonishing experience. The city felt enormous, bustling, and fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you are about to go through this, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to your new life in London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city fully.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had when I initially got here.

First Step: Secure Your Housing

Prevent expensive hotel charges by booking your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime spots disappear quickly. Try to reside close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep long travels for early classes.

Vital Administrative Tasks

Upon your arrival in London, focus on these tasks:

  • Money transfers – As an international student, seek an economical method to receive funds from home. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Ensure you have internet access for navigation by promptly acquiring a UK SIM card.
  • Setting up a bank account – Some banks might require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Open a bank account for daily expenses and any part-time employment.
  • Student ID card – This is essential for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as possible.

Significance of the First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-run clubs and societies and join those that catch your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Smart Travel in London

During my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable yet hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically.

Walking is still an excellent way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally intense initially. Finding a comforting space is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. Another spot is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.

Discover your own places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Discover the City

Get to know your new surroundings around campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.

Explore renowned landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will come from the moments you get a bit lost!

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag – Stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas offer minimal protection against wind-driven rain.
  • Participate in unique events – They often lead to the best stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – It’s a normal feeling at the beginning.

You don’t have to have all the answers on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
