### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, facing the unknown felt quite daunting. Now, reflecting on this last academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences. But what have I learned this year, and where do I find myself now?

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the university’s outset was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes kicked off, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here have truly become a part of my second family. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating casual conversations with those who were equally anxious.

So, what have I inferred? I learned that taking a leap of faith at the year’s beginning is vital. If you’re not prepared immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a diverse array of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

#### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when witnessing others studying and apparently thriving.

What aided me in managing these sentiments was coming to terms with the fact that everyone shares the same struggles. If a concept eludes you, chances are many others are grappling with it too. The essential thing is to ask for assistance—whether from peers or faculty. Learning to seek help is arguably the most significant skill you can cultivate in your first year.

#### Establishing Rapport with Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we face. They ensure consistent communication with us throughout the year and are always eager to assist.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support provided until the year’s end, I wish I had sought out that support earlier. At the start, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, enabling me to foster connections with staff members. This experience turned out to be invaluable. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never receive too much help.

#### Insights Gained

In reflection, this year has shown me that the anxieties I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—were often unfounded. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to manage stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It’s been a path of personal growth, academic difficulties, and the formation of lasting friendships. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university journey, remember to take those leaps of faith, seek help when required, and most importantly, relish the experience.
