Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite the experience; the city felt enormous, noisy, and incredibly fast. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to life in London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new city.
No matter if you arrive several weeks before classes start or right before the term kicks off, here are the tips I wish I had received when I first arrived.
Secure Housing Early
Prevent costly hotel expenses by locking in accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but many aren’t. The best places get taken fast, so try to find something within proximity to campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy journeys for early classes.
Key Life Administration
When you reach London, make these tasks your top priority:
- Money Transfers: As an international student, identify a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card: Acquire a UK SIM card quickly to avoid being data-less in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
- Bank Account: Quickly establish a bank account for everyday expenditures and part-time jobs. Online banks like Monzo or Starling cater well to students.
- Student ID Card: Obtain your student ID card to gain access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts.
Maximize Your First Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s the perfect moment to mingle with flatmates, peers, and future companions. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re naturally reserved, challenge yourself to engage; I encountered some of my closest friends during campus explorations and society fairs. This week will set the foundation for your university experience.
Navigate London Wisely
In my first week, I had to walk nine kilometers across London due to my uncertainty with the Tube and buses. Learn from my error by getting a Student Oyster card and seeking the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London might feel emotionally taxing at first. Identify a comfort zone, such as a park, café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and rejuvenate. My comfort spots are a nearby park and the O2, where I enjoy a movie weekly to relax.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with your new environment near campus and home. Locate local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries for food or coffee. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest moments will stem from getting pleasantly lost!
Final Insights for Beginning at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to steer clear of fees for single-use options.
- Invest in a waterproof coat; umbrellas don’t hold up well in windy weather.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented at first; this is perfectly normal.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your adventure in London one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
