Stepping foot in London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you ever find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to ease your transition into your London life before commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to make the most of the experience.

Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just moments before classes commence, here’s the advice I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.

Locate Housing

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by organizing your living arrangements ahead of time. While I got lucky, that’s not the case for everyone. The prime choices disappear quickly, so try to find a place close to the campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times for morning lectures.

Administrative Tasks: Key Items to Address

When you reach London, handle these essential matters swiftly:

  • Money Transfers – As an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical option to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
  • UK SIM Card – Acquire a UK SIM card and data package right away to effectively navigate your new environment.
  • Bank Account – Open a bank account promptly for everyday purchases and part-time job deposits. Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling cater well to students.
  • Student ID Card – Make sure to collect your student ID card to gain access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial plays a vital role in shaping your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and club events. Your first week greatly influences the tone of your university experience.

Exploring London: Smart Travel Tips

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer stroll across London. While it was memorable, it’s not advisable. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably.

Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city and come across hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally intense, especially in the beginning. Finding a comfort zone is beneficial – for me, it’s a local park where I unwind daily. Another favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute trip away, where I enjoy a movie each week.

Unearth your own relaxation havens, whether it’s a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to recharge and refresh.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with the frequently visited spots near your campus and residence. Pinpoint your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous escapades.

Final Advice for Beginning at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable shopping bag to circumvent charges for single-use options.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas often fail in the wind.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t worry if you initially feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal.

You don’t have to have everything mapped out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
