Upon my initial arrival in London, the city appeared massive, noisy, rapid, and somewhat intimidating. Equipped with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in this situation, relax. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to appreciate the city.

Whether you land weeks ahead of schedule or just before the term starts, here’s what I wish I had known.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotels by booking your housing in advance. I was fortunate, but that’s not the case for everyone. The most desirable options are snatched up quickly! Try to find a place near the campus or along a reliable Tube line to minimize long travel times.

Vital Life Administration

Address these key necessities soon after arriving in London:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, locate a trustworthy, cost-effective method for transferring funds. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
  • UK SIM card – lacking data, you may struggle with navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan promptly.
  • Bank account – some banks require a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish an account for daily spending and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus buildings, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial holds great significance. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, peers, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I formed close bonds during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. Your first week sets the tone for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but quite chaotic. Secure your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel. Walking is still a fantastic way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Locate Your Comfort Zones

London can be quite overwhelming, especially at the start. Having a favorite place aids in coping – mine is a nearby park. I stop by daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly. Discover your own havens, like a cozy café or bookstore, to relax.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas surrounding campus and your residence. Seek out local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from little adventures of getting lost!

Concluding Advice for Starting at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well in gusts.
  • Join in on unique events – they create excellent stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have it all figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
