**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed by anxiety, fear, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always identified as shy and reserved, diving into an unfamiliar environment was outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, challenges, and lots of enjoyment, I can evaluate what I’ve discovered and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was making new friends. If you’re a future student, this may be one of your greatest concerns as well. On my first day moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day hidden in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I’m pleased to report that I’ve established some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my course and beyond.
What worked for me? Taking that first plunge of faith. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and opportunities to connect with others. I also realized that the most important thing is to simply be yourself. With such a varied group of students, you’re sure to find those who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and challenges was yet another substantial hurdle. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your skills, particularly when you observe peers excelling.
What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult, it’s likely others are as well. The crucial step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to seek help is arguably the most critical skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
The faculty within the Materials department has been exceptional. They sincerely want students to achieve success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and offered continuous support. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which later proved to be invaluable. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway is to leverage the support that exists—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during it—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support offered by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of pleasure and fun, leading to substantial personal growth.
If you’re on the brink of starting your own university journey, understand that challenges are unavoidable, but so is personal growth. Take that leap, embrace the support surrounding you, and believe that you will find your niche.
