Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, noisy, and fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor the city from the outset.
Whether you’re arriving weeks ahead of time or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Secure your accommodation
To sidestep costly hotel expenses, organize your living arrangements ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the top choices vanish quickly. Try to reside near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.
Handling life admin: essential arrangements
Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, find a cost-effective method to receive funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – indispensable for navigation and connectivity in a new city. Acquire one soon after your arrival.
- Bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, but digital options like Monzo or Starling are swift and friendly to students. Open an account for day-to-day expenses and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – important for access to campus facilities, libraries, and student deals. Get it as soon as you can.
The inaugural week at Imperial is essential
Your initial week at Imperial is crucial for your academic journey. It’s the time to meet housemates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re timid, make an effort to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week sets the foundation for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and found myself walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. Walking remains a fantastic way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your favorite spots
London can feel emotionally intense at first. Having a go-to place helps – mine is a local park that I visit daily for some relaxation. Another is the O2, just a ten-minute walk away, where I catch movies weekly. Identify your own retreats, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to de-stress and recharge.
Discover the city
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favored food or coffee spots. Visit iconic landmarks, take advantage of free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your best experiences will arise from getting a little lost.
Final thoughts before immersing yourself in Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are not practical in windy weather.
- Participate in unique events – they lead to memorable stories.
- Don’t be alarmed if you feel disoriented – it’s common at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, collect your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
