Entering London was initially daunting due to its size and speed. With only a suitcase and Google Maps as my guides, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need for concern. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London prior to beginning your journey at Imperial.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s what I wished I had known when I landed.

Secure your accommodation

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as prime options vanish swiftly. Strive to find a place near your campus or a reliable Tube line to avoid lengthy travels for early classes.

Essential tasks for settling in

Once you’re in London, tackle these necessary items without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, discover an economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide good exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation in your new environment.
  • Bank account – certain banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and favorable for students. Open an account for everyday banking and part-time job earnings.
  • Student ID card – this allows access to campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

Significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for shaping your student experience. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies that align with your interests.

Even if you’re naturally reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and formed close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Smart travel in London

In my initial week, my lack of familiarity with the Tube and buses led to a nine-kilometer hike across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enable cheaper travel.

Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Having a go-to place can help – mine is a local park where I visit daily to unwind. The O2, merely a 10-minute walk away, is another location where I relax weekly while watching a movie.

Identify your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These havens are crucial for relaxation and recharging.

Adventure through the city

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food or coffee joints.

Check out iconic sites, explore complimentary museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus. Many of your best memories will arise from impromptu excursions.

Last-minute advice before starting at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against rain driven by wind.
  • Engage with quirky events – they often yield the finest stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented at first – it’s a typical experience.

You don’t need to have every detail sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I found myself. Take a deep breath, take your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
