By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, bustling, and energetic. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit disoriented. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to aid your adjustment to London before beginning at Imperial, so you can embrace your new life in the city.
Regardless of whether you arrive several weeks ahead or just before the semester kicks off, here’s what I wish I had known upon my initial arrival.
Secure Accommodation
Prevent costly hotel stays by sorting out your housing in advance. I was fortunate, but not all are. The prime choices get snatched up quickly! Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for early classes.
Essential Life Admin Tasks
Upon reaching London, address these tasks without delay:
- Money Transfers – International students require an affordable method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Data is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and a data plan shortly after your arrival.
- Bank Account – Some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Set up an account for your daily spending and part-time job payments.
- Student ID Card – This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your opening week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s the moment to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to join in. I made some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week sets the foundation for your university journey.
Travel Smart in London
During my first week, I had no grasp of the Tube or bus routes and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but quite hectic. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses. However, walking is still a fantastic way to uncover secret spots in the city.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally intense. Having a comforting place is beneficial. For me, it’s the park close to my home and the O2 for weekly film nights. Discover your own retreats, whether it be a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and your residence. Pinpoint your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee establishments. Explore iconic landmarks, visit complimentary museums, and relish the view from a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will come from wandering a bit off the beaten path!
Final Recommendations Before Commencing at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective on windy days.
- Engage in unique events – they often yield the best stories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel a bit lost – it’s quite normal at the beginning.
You’re not required to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re seeing this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I started at Imperial. So take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
