Stepping into London for the first time was an intense experience. The city appeared enormous, bustling, and fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling into London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to genuinely enjoy your new life in the city.
Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just before the semester starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received during my initial arrival.
First things first: secure your accommodation
To avoid costly hotel expenses, arrange your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that privilege, as the prime choices are quickly snatched up. Look for a location close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy travels to early morning classes.
Administrative tasks: organizing the essential necessities
Once you arrive in London, take care of these essential tasks quickly:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, find a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better currency rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one without delay to ensure you have data for navigation in your new surroundings.
- Bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Open an account for regular transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this is crucial for entry into campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
Your initial week at Imperial is vital
Your first week at Imperial is essential for your student journey. It’s the time to meet roommates, future classmates, and new friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that captivate you.
Even if you’re timid, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society activities. Your first week establishes the path for your university experience.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my inaugural week, unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but memorable. Avoid my blunder by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.
Nonetheless, walking is a wonderful way to absorb the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures along the way.
Locate your cozy spots
Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comforting place helps – mine is a local park that I visit daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I watch movies weekly to de-stress.
Discover your own comforting spots, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and refresh.
And don’t forget to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite spots for meals or coffee.
Explore iconic sites, check out free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a great view. Some of your most memorable experiences will stem from getting a bit lost!
Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against wind-driven rain.
- Participate in unique events – they provide great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences that at first.
You don’t need to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. So take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
