Stepping foot in London for the very first time was quite an experience. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re on the verge of this experience, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance on acclimating to London before embarking on your journey at Imperial, enabling you to truly relish your new urban life.

Whether you hit the ground running weeks ahead or right before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I would have appreciated on my arrival.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Dodge expensive hotel fees by organizing your lodging ahead of time. I got lucky, but others may not, as the prime choices vanish swiftly. Strive to find a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for those early classes.

Administrative tasks: getting the essentials in order

As soon as you get to London, address these key necessities promptly:

  • Money transfers – being an international student, discover an economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having mobile data is vital for navigation purposes. Obtain a UK SIM card and data package shortly after your arrival.
  • Bank account – some banks require a UK address, yet digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Set up an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and benefiting from student discounts. Collect it without delay.

Your first week at Imperial matters the most

The initial week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, peers, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and register for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re rather reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting around London: smart travel choices

During my inaugural week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was memorable but chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably.

Walking remains the finest method to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures simply by exploring.

Discover your comfort zones

London can be emotionally taxing, especially in the beginning. Having a comforting space is beneficial – mine happens to be a nearby park which I visit daily to unwind. The O2, only 10 minutes away, is another place where I de-stress weekly with a film.

Seek out your own comfort zones, like a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

And remember to explore!

Become familiar with the surrounding areas of your campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite food or coffee joints.

Check out well-known landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from the moments you get a bit lost.

Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

  • Bring a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against the wind.
  • Participate in unique events – they make for great anecdotes.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences that initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
