Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city appeared enormous, bustling, and energetic. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself confused. If you’re on the verge of this experience, take heart. Here’s how to get acclimated in London before embarking on your journey at Imperial, so you can appreciate your new surroundings.
Whether you’re getting here early or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wished I had received.
Secure Accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging housing in advance. I was lucky, but many aren’t, as the finest options vanish rapidly. Look for a place close to the campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize travel time for early classes.
Key Administrative Tasks
Address these important tasks soon after your arrival in London:
- Currency transfers – International students need a cost-effective method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM card – Acquire one promptly for internet access and navigation in a new environment.
- Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. An account is essential for conducting transactions and receiving part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.
Your First Week at Imperial: A Critical Period
Your inaugural week at Imperial is significant. It’s the time when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student organizations and clubs. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to join in. I made lifelong friends through spontaneous campus tours and society tables. This week establishes the groundwork for your university journey.
Smart Travel in London
In my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was a remarkable experience but quite chaotic – don’t replicate my mistake. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is also excellent for uncovering hidden treasures within the city.
Discover Your Favorite Spots
London can feel daunting, especially at the beginning. Finding a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a park nearby. I frequent it daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, where I enjoy movies every week. Seek out your own places, like a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench for relaxation.
Discover the City!
Familiarize yourself with your new surroundings near campus and home. Identify your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and revel in a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from spontaneous explorations.
Final Insights for Your Start at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag – Stores typically charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas can be ineffective in gusty weather.
- Participate in unique events – They create memorable experiences.
- If you feel out of place, don’t stress – It’s a common feeling in the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
