Arriving in London was initially quite daunting, given its enormity and rapid pace. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt disoriented. If you are about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, ensuring you relish your new urban life.

Whether you come early or right before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Find Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by securing housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but many people aren’t. Target a location close to campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.

Necessary Life Administration

Address these essentials when you arrive:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for improved rates.
  • UK SIM card – vital for navigation and staying connected.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and cater to students.
  • Student ID card – grants access to campus resources and student discounts.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal for meeting fellow students and joining organizations. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led societies.

Pushing yourself to engage; I forged lifelong friendships through random activities and society booths.

Navigate London Smartly

At first, I covered nine kilometers due to errors with public transport. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more economical travel.

Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Relaxation Spots

London can be a lot to handle. Identify a comforting location, such as a park or a preferred café, to unwind and rejuvenate.

Discover!

Get to know local supermarkets, pharmacies, and go-to places. Tour famous landmarks, museums, and indulge in spontaneous strolls around the city.

Final Suggestions

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid extra charges.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket for the blustery rain.
  • Join in on unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal.

There’s no need to have everything sorted out right away. If you’re reading this, you’re already making progress. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey.
