Arriving in London for the very first time was a bit much. The city seemed vast, noisy, and incredibly fast-paced. With only a suitcase and Google Maps as my guide, I felt hesitant about where to start. If you find yourself in the same boat, don’t panic. Here’s some guidance to assist you in navigating London before you commence your studies at Imperial, so you can fully embrace the fresh experience of being in a new city.

Whether you land weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had when I got here.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by booking a place early. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime options disappear quickly. Target a location that’s close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Crucial Administrative Tasks

Take care of these important matters as soon as you set foot in London:

  • Money Transfers: For overseas students, platforms like Wise or Revolut provide cost-effective ways to send money from your home country.
  • UK SIM Card: Acquire one right away for connectivity and navigation in an unfamiliar city.
  • Bank Account: Digital banking services such as Monzo or Starling are fast and tailored for students. You’ll need an account for transactions and part-time work payments.
  • Student ID Card: This is essential for entering campus buildings, utilizing the library, and accessing student discounts. Make sure to pick it up as soon as you can.

Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student life. It’s the time when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led organizations and engage in activities that catch your interest.

Even if you’re more reserved, make an effort to join in. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society showcases. This first week establishes the tone for your entire university experience.

Navigating London Wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and bus systems, which resulted in me walking nine kilometers across London. While it was an unforgettable experience, it was also quite hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.

Exploring on foot remains a fantastic method to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally intense. Having a go-to place can be beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence and the O2 for weekly movie outings. Identify your own comforting locations, such as a café, bookstore, or bench by the riverside, to unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with your environment by locating nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Visit notable landmarks, explore free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from moments of getting slightly lost.

Final Advice for Your Start at Imperial

  • Grab a reusable bag to bypass fees for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don’t hold up well in the wind.
  • Join in on unconventional events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on day one. If you are reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I arrived at Imperial. Take a deep breath, secure your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
