Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared enormous, bustling, and filled with energy. Carrying only a suitcase and relying on Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need for concern. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new city experience.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving well in advance or right before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Book your accommodation early to steer clear of pricey hotel fees. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Seek a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: getting the essentials in order

Upon your arrival in London, tackle these essential matters promptly:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy, cost-effective method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and directions in your new environment.
  • Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. You’ll require an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment paychecks.
  • Student ID card – crucial for campus entry, library access, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is pivotal

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to investigate over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I forged meaningful connections during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

Throughout my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to my unfamiliarity with the Tube and buses. It was unforgettable but hectic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably. Walking remains an excellent way to navigate and find hidden treasures.

Discover your comfort zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Identify a comforting place, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My personal favorites are a nearby park and the O2 for films. These spots provide solace in the bustling city.

And don’t forget to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest moments will arise from a little wandering.

Final thoughts before you jump into Imperial student life

  • Invest in a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use options.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective against the wind.
  • Accept invites to unique events – they create wonderful memories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel lost – it’s a common experience initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
