Stepping into London for the first time was an intense experience. The city felt vast, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was a bit disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to your new life in London ahead of your start at Imperial, ensuring you can enjoy the city.
Whether you’re arriving ahead of schedule or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish had been given to me.
Secure Accommodation
Prevent hefty hotel expenses by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The prime choices go fast, so look for a location close to your campus or a convenient Tube line to minimize long trips.
Administrative Tasks: Must-Haves
As soon as you reach London, focus on these important tasks:
- Currency transfers: As an overseas student, utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for economical transfers.
- UK SIM card: Acquire one right away for internet access and navigation.
- Bank account: Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer quick, student-friendly services.
- Student ID card: Vital for campus entry, library access, and discounts.
Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week is key for meeting new people and joining various clubs. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led organizations. Even if you’re a bit reserved, get involved to make friends and set the tone for your university experience.
Navigate London Wisely
At first, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to misunderstanding public transport. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card for cheaper travel. Walking can still be wonderful for uncovering hidden treasures.
Locate Relaxing Spots
London can be a lot to handle. Find comforting locations like a local park or the O2 for some downtime. Whether a café or a scenic bench by the river, having a place to relax is priceless.
Discover the City
Get to know nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, and your go-to places for food or coffee. Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and embrace spontaneous adventures. Some of your fondest memories will be born from the experience of getting a bit lost.
Final Suggestions
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket for blustery conditions.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel lost; it’s completely normal.
You don’t have to have everything planned on your first day. You’re already ahead by perusing this. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London journey step by step.
