### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and ambiguity about what awaited me. I was on the verge of embarking on my first-year adventure in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, taking the plunge into such a significant transformation felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with development, challenges, and considerable enjoyment, I recognize the extent of my learning and progress.

#### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re an incoming student considering this, it’s probably a concern for you too. On my first day at the student residence, just days before the term officially kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and meet others.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. My friends here have become like a second family to me, and it all began with small gestures—engaging in light conversation with individuals who found themselves in similar situations.

What did I take away from this? Taking that step at the beginning of the year is invaluable. Even if you feel unprepared, numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others will arise. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and values.

#### Navigating the Academic Adjustment

Another significant hurdle was adapting to the course’s workload and complexity. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more profound. It’s easy to feel lost or question your capabilities, especially when you observe peers studying and feel as though you’re lagging.

What assisted me through this was realizing that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely others are as well. The crucial point is to reach out for help—whether from classmates or teaching staff. This proved to be one of the most essential lessons I absorbed during my first year: don’t hesitate to seek out assistance.

#### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They truly wish for students to thrive and show understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open, addressing our issues and offering support.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the start of the year, I dared to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to form connections with staff members, which turned out to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual chats, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best choices you can make for yourself.

My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal. You can never have too much assistance!

#### Lessons Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was unwarranted. The encouragement from staff and fellow students truly made a difference. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

This year has been a voyage of personal growth, and I’m eager to see what the future brings as I progress with my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
