Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city appeared extensive, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t panic. Here’s how to acclimate to London before commencing at Imperial, enabling you to appreciate the city.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving early or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure housing

Steer clear of expensive hotels by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Opt for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to evade lengthy commutes for early classes.

Necessary administrative tasks

When you arrive in London, tackle these important items:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, discover a budget-friendly method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – make sure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar city. Acquire a UK SIM card without delay.
  • Bank account – while some banks demand a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are prompt and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and earnings from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – essential for utilizing campus facilities, libraries, and receiving student discounts. Get yours as soon as you can.

Significance of your first week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for your university experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-organized clubs and societies and engage in activities that spark your interest.

Even if you feel reserved, make an effort to get involved. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Smart traveling in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, which resulted in me walking nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable but a bit frantic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains a wonderful way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Establish your favorite spots

London can be emotionally taxing. Identifying a comfort place is beneficial – mine is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, located just 10 minutes away, is another preferred spot for enjoying a film.

Discover your comfort zones, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside seat. These locales are essential for de-stressing and rejuvenating.

Discover the city

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and beloved eateries.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from a little misdirection!

Final thoughts before embarking on your Imperial journey

  • Utilize a reusable bag – retailers charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t reliable in gusty weather.
  • Participate in unique events – they make wonderful anecdotes.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s normal initially.

You don’t need to have it all sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
